Vasco Lucas Nunes was born in Lisbon, Portugal, and began working in the film and television industry in the early 90s. He has worked extensively in media production in five continents while living in Europe and the US.
His early experience in television and film included producing and editing for CNN, producing and shooting for international promo and documentary house 7ate9 Creative, a photosonics operator for commercials in Europe along with R&D for Dedo Weigert Film in Munich, winner of two technical achievement awards by the Academy. Soon after moving to Los Angeles, where he currently resides, Nunes worked under legendary cinematographer Conrad W. Hall, ASC on Road to Perdition.
In Los Angeles he completed a masters in cinematography at the American Film Institute as a grantee from the Gulbenkian Arts Foundation in Lisbon.
His work as a cinematographer has spanned from documentaries, several TV series such as Nimrod Nation for the Sundance Channel, music videos for the likes of RUN-DMC, David Lee Roth, Vanessa Carlton, Lyle Lovett, The Vines, OK GO, and M.I.A.
He has done national commercial campaigns for State Farm, Rock Corps, and MTV. He has done a multicontinental documentation of breakdancing for Planet B Boy, a directorial foray with Lyle Lovett for his latest album via his production company, Lusitan. He also shot several documentary projects with Interloper Films, a company he ran with Ondi Timoner, the latest of which is a feature documentary called Join Us, and the Rebirth of Lollapalooza in 2005-06.
His work is part of the permanent collection of the Museum of Modern Art in New York City, and has garnered international cinematography awards, a Grand Jury Prize at Sundance, and film selections at numerous festivals, including Cannes, Sundance, Tribeca, SXSW, Locarno, Vancouver, Seattle, Melbourne, Pusan, Karlovy Vary, and London.
He is a member of the AIP (Portuguese Cinematographers Association), IMAGO (European Association of Cinematographers), IATSE Local 600 (Cinematographers Guild) and DCS (Digital Cinema Society).
He currently works independently as a cinematographer and filmmaker under representation by the New York Office agency.
